How to Know If Your Milk Is Pure? A Complete Guide for Lahore Families

If you buy milk in Lahore, you have probably wondered at some point whether what is in the bottle is really what the seller says it is. It is a fair question. Milk is a daily purchase, it goes to children and elders, and from the outside most milk looks the same.
This guide explains what "pure milk" actually means, what the available evidence says about milk adulteration in Punjab, which simple checks you can do at home (and what they cannot tell you), how you can have milk tested for free in Lahore, how cow milk and buffalo milk differ, and what to ask any supplier before you trust them with your family's milk.
The Short Answer
If you only have a minute, these are the points that matter most:
- "Pure" means two different things. Milk can be free of additions (unadulterated) and still need boiling to be safe (raw milk has not been pasteurised).
- You usually cannot judge milk by looking at it. Adulteration is done so that milk can pass as normal milk.
- Home checks are rough. They look for a few specific substances only, and they say nothing about germs.
- A proper test is available for free. The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) tests household milk free of charge at its District Food Laboratory in Lahore.
- Boil raw milk every time. This applies whoever your supplier is.
- Choose a supplier who explains how the milk reaches you, answers questions plainly, and does not mind testing.
What Does "Pure Milk" Mean?
People use the word "pure" for two different things, and it helps to separate them.
Unadulterated milk is milk that has nothing added to it and nothing taken out of it. Adulteration is usually about money. A Pakistani laboratory study describes it as a food fraud carried out "to gain financial benefits by removing fat and cream from whole milk" and then compensating with other substances to make the milk look like whole milk. In everyday terms: fat taken out, and other substances added so that the milk still passes as whole milk.
Safe milk is milk that is free from harmful germs. This is a different question. Milk can be completely unadulterated and still carry bacteria, because raw milk has not been pasteurised. A purity test cannot tell you whether milk is safe to drink raw.
So there are two separate habits to build: choose a supplier you can check, and boil raw milk before you drink it. We come back to both below.
How Common Is Milk Adulteration in Punjab?
No single figure describes every supplier, and anyone who gives you one number for "all milk in Lahore" is guessing. What we can do is look at what the PFA and published studies have reported.
What the PFA has reported
- In August 2024, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported that the PFA had discarded 853,000 litres of adulterated milk across Punjab in six months, after its dairy safety teams checked the quality of 175.177 million litres.
- On 24 June 2026, the PFA published that it had raided a dairy unit in Gawal Mandi, Lahore, and discarded about 1,500 litres of thick adulterated material and 10,000 litres of what it called fake milk. It also confiscated equipment and began legal action.
What published studies have found
- A study of 190 raw cow and buffalo milk samples, published in the Pakistan Journal of Health Sciences in 2023, found water in 148 samples (77.89%) and reported semi-synthetic milk in 2.63%. The abstract does not say where the samples were collected.
- A 2024 study of 100 buffalo milk samples from southern Punjab, published in the Biomedical Journal of Scientific & Technical Research, found no adulteration in the 40 samples taken from dairy farms. It did find adulteration in samples from local vendors and commercial chillers, including skim milk, detergent and starch, and urea in the summer samples.
These are individual studies with limited sample sizes, so they should not be read as a measure of every milk seller in Lahore. What they do show is that adulteration is a documented problem in Punjab, that it varies from supplier to supplier, and that in the buffalo milk study the problems appeared in samples from vendors and chillers rather than farms.
Common Types of Milk Adulteration
The studies above point to a few recurring problems:
- Added water, found in 148 of the 190 samples in the first study.
- Removed fat or cream (skim milk), found in the vendor and chiller samples in the southern Punjab study.
- Detergent, found in both studies.
- Starch, found in the southern Punjab study.
- Urea, found in the summer samples in the southern Punjab study.
Because adulteration is carried out to make milk pass as normal milk, it can be hard to spot by appearance alone. That is why the checks below matter.
Where Problems Can Enter Between the Farm and Your Kitchen
Milk passes through several hands before it reaches you: milking, cooling, storage, transport, and then the seller or delivery person. The southern Punjab study found clean samples at the farm and adulterated samples at the vendor and chiller stages. That is one study, and it does not mean every farm is clean or every vendor is not. But it is a good reason to ask any supplier about the stages after milking, and not only about the animals.
Useful questions to ask are in the supplier checklist later in this guide.
Myths About Checking Milk by Eye
"Thick milk is pure milk." Thickness is not proof of purity. The studies found starch in samples, a substance that is not part of milk. A milk that looks creamy tells you little about what is in it.
"White, clean-looking milk must be fine." Adulterated milk is meant to look normal. Appearance alone proves little.
"If it does not smell, it is safe." Purity and safety are different questions. Raw milk may carry bacteria without any visible sign, which is why it needs boiling (see below).
Simple Home Checks, and Their Limits
India's food regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), publishes a booklet called DART (Detect Adulteration with Rapid Test) for households. It describes these as "common quick tests for detection of some food adulterants at household" and says their scope is to build consumer awareness about food safety. We have not found a Pakistani authority that endorses these tests as a replacement for laboratory testing, so treat them as a rough first look only.
For milk, FSSAI describes three tests:
- Water test. Put a drop of milk on a slanting, polished surface. FSSAI says pure milk flows slowly and leaves a white trail, while milk adulterated with water flows immediately without leaving a mark.
- Detergent test. Shake 5 to 10 ml of milk with an equal amount of water. FSSAI says detergent-adulterated milk forms a dense lather, while pure milk forms only a very thin layer of foam.
- Starch test. Add two to three drops of tincture of iodine to the milk. FSSAI says a blue colour indicates starch.
Safety note: Do not drink or cook with milk you have tested, and keep iodine out of the reach of children.
What these checks cannot do:
- They look for particular substances only. A clean result does not prove the milk is free of everything else.
- They cannot tell you whether the milk carries harmful bacteria.
- They cannot give you a measured result. If a home check worries you, the right next step is a proper laboratory test, which is free in Lahore (see the next section).
Get Your Milk Tested for Free in Lahore
The PFA runs a food testing service for the public. According to the PFA's food testing page, household milk is tested free of charge at the District Food Laboratory in Lahore. As published at the time of writing (October 2026):
- Where: District Food Laboratory, 84-C New Muslim Town, near Naqsha Stop, Wahdat Road, Lahore.
- What to bring: a 200 ml sample of the milk, handed in at the front desk.
- How long: the PFA says results take about 10 minutes.
- When: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
Opening hours and procedures can change, so confirm with the PFA before you go. Carry the sample in a clean container and keep it cool until you hand it in.
How to Report Suspected Adulterated Milk
If you believe a seller is passing off adulterated milk, you can report it to the PFA. Its complaint page lists a 24/7 helpline, 1223, and a WhatsApp number, 0333 1017300. Check the PFA complaint page before using them, because the PFA has warned that a fake advertisement is circulating that has no connection to it.
Why You Still Need to Boil Raw Milk
Passing a purity test does not make raw milk safe to drink straight from the bottle. Germany's Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) states in its raw milk FAQ: "The only way people can protect themselves against infection when consuming raw milk is to boil the milk before drinking it."
The BfR also advises that particularly sensitive groups, such as children, pregnant women, elderly or sick people, should refrain from consuming raw milk that has not been boiled beforehand.
In practice:
- Boil raw milk soon after it arrives.
- Let it cool.
- Keep it in a clean, covered container in the refrigerator, and use it promptly.
This applies whoever your supplier is, and whatever a home test shows. It also applies to milk you use in dishes that are not heated afterwards, such as homemade yoghurt.
Cow Milk or Buffalo Milk: Which Should You Choose?
Both are common in Pakistani homes, and the main practical difference is richness. India's National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) states that buffalo milk contains a higher amount of fat and a higher amount of protein than cow milk, while cow and buffalo milk contain almost similar amounts of lactose.
In the kitchen, that difference matters:
- Buffalo milk has a thicker, creamier body. It is the traditional choice for dahi, lassi, kheer and anything that benefits from a creamy base, and many households prefer it in tea.
- Cow milk is lighter and milder. It suits families who want a lighter glass of milk, or who use milk with cereal or in everyday cooking.
Neither is the right answer for every home. Some families order both, using buffalo milk for tea and dairy preparations and cow milk for drinking. If you want to try them side by side, AwanFarms offers Organic Cow Milk and Organic Buffalo Milk, each sold by the litre.
A Checklist: Questions to Ask Any Milk Supplier
Since you cannot confirm purity by looking, the most reliable thing you can do is choose a supplier who answers plainly. Before you commit, ask:
- What exactly am I buying? Cow milk or buffalo milk, raw or pasteurised, and what quantity.
- Where does the milk come from, and how does it reach me? A supplier who can explain the route from farm to doorstep, including cooling and transport, is easier to trust than one who cannot.
- Is anything added to the milk or taken out of it? You are entitled to a straight answer.
- Would you be comfortable if I had the milk tested at the PFA lab? A supplier with nothing to hide should not mind.
- What happens if the milk arrives spoiled? Ask for the answer in writing.
- How does delivery work? Timing, charges, and what happens if you are not at home.
- How is the milk packaged? Glass bottles are easy to clean and reuse, but only if the return process is clear.
- Can I cancel or pause? A supplier should explain this before you pay, not after.
How AwanFarms Delivers Milk in Lahore
AwanFarms is based on Barki Road, Lahore, and delivers fresh cow milk and buffalo milk to customers in Lahore. Both are raw milk, so they should be boiled before drinking, as explained above. Here is how our service works:
- Free delivery. Delivery is free.
- Returnable glass bottles. The milk comes in glass bottles that are returned rather than thrown away. Subscribers return the previous bottles at the next delivery. For sample deliveries and first trial orders, the bottles are handed back to our delivery partner at the time of delivery.
- Cancellation. You can cancel a one-time order until the delivery route goes out.
- If something goes wrong. If your milk arrives spoiled, you can share proof with us and choose either a replacement or a reduction on your bill.
The full details are written on our terms page, so you can read them before you order.
Single Order or a Milk Subscription?
A single order is a good way to try the milk, or to cover an occasional need. You can browse both milks on our product pages: fresh cow milk and fresh buffalo milk.
If milk is part of your household's daily routine, ordering one delivery at a time quickly becomes repetitive. A milk subscription lets you choose your milk and your delivery routine once, and then receive it on schedule without placing a new order each time. For subscription customers, the bill is sent on WhatsApp.
The sensible way to start is with a small first order. Try the cow milk, the buffalo milk, or both, see which your household prefers, and then decide whether a regular routine makes sense.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I tell if milk is pure just by looking at it? Not reliably. Adulteration is carried out so that milk can pass as normal milk, so appearance alone proves little. A laboratory test is the reliable way to check.
Are home tests for milk accurate? They are rough checks for specific substances such as water, detergent and starch. The FSSAI booklet presents them as household awareness tools. They cannot detect everything and cannot tell you whether milk is microbiologically safe.
Can I get milk tested for free in Lahore? According to the PFA, household milk is tested free of charge at its District Food Laboratory in Lahore. Bring a 200 ml sample. Confirm the current hours with the PFA before you go.
Do I need to boil raw milk? Yes. Boil raw milk before drinking it, and let it cool before you refrigerate it.
Is buffalo milk or cow milk better? Neither is better for everyone. Buffalo milk contains more fat and protein and is creamier, while cow milk is lighter. Choose according to how your household uses milk.
Where can I report suspected adulterated milk? You can report it to the PFA. Its complaint page lists a 24/7 helpline, 1223.
Do you deliver in Lahore, and is delivery free? AwanFarms is based on Barki Road, Lahore, and delivers to customers in Lahore. Delivery is free.
What happens to the glass bottles? They are returned. Subscribers return the previous bottles at the next delivery, and bottles from sample and first trial orders are handed back to our delivery partner at the time of delivery.
Can I cancel an order? Yes, you can cancel a one-time order until the delivery route goes out.
What if my milk arrives spoiled? Share proof with us, and you can choose a replacement or a reduction on your bill.

Choose Milk You Can Check
Pure milk is not something you can judge by colour, thickness, or the label on a bottle. It comes from a supplier who explains where the milk comes from, welcomes testing, and tells you plainly what happens when something goes wrong. Test milk when you have doubts, boil raw milk every time, and keep asking questions until you are satisfied.
If you would like to try AwanFarms, you can order cow milk, buffalo milk, or set up a milk subscription.
